Top Tips for Newly Qualified Pharmacists

Being a newly qualified pharmacist isn’t easy, but we’re here to help. We've put together a list of helpful tips and resources to get you through the first few weeks of your new career.

Introduce Yourself

Like any job, the first thing you should do when you start working as a newly qualified pharmacist is to introduce yourself to the team you’re working with. Whether you’re only locuming for one shift, or you’ve bagged a permanent position, make yourself known to the team and get to know them. Creating a good relationship will ensure better communication and an easier work environment.

Ask Questions

You may be new to a pharmacy, but the rest of the team isn’t! Utilise their knowledge and ask their opinions on things. In some cases, they will already have a pre-existing relationship with a patient and will be able to give you some advice on how best to handle a scenario. If you have any questions before your shift, you can always reach out to us here at Clarity and we will do our best to answer!

CPD

As a pharmacist, you are required to carry out Continuous Professional Development (CPD), in order to ensure lifelong learning and maintain appropriate practice in the practice of pharmacy. CPD is anything that will improve practice and improve the quality of service and safety given to patients. Therefore, CPD can include information learnt at conferences, courses, workshops, practice-based learning, etc. You must keep a record of all CPD and be able to show evidence of this to the Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) on request.

Learn from your mistakes

We all make mistakes at work from time to time, and being a pharmacist is no different. What’s important is that you own up to any mistakes you make and learn from them. There's always room for improvement!

Network

Network at any given opportunity. Meet and build connections with other people in the pharmacy industry. Use this time to be social and create relationships with people who may help you down the road. You can follow Clarity Recruitment on Linkedin, Instagram or Facebook and use this as a starting point to meet other pharmacists and engage in discussions. Have a read of our blog post on how to get your Linkedin set up here.
