Relocating & Registering as a Pharmacist in Ireland (Non-EU/EEA)

Ireland is a great place to work for those in the healthcare sector due to its high salaries, job benefits and career progression opportunities. However, the process of relocation is slightly more difficult if you have received your qualifications outside of the EU/EEA. It will take longer, but if you’re serious about moving it will be well worth it! If you’d like to find out more, keep reading.

Step One: Register with the PSI

If you have obtained a pharmacy qualification in a country outside of the EU/EEA, your first step will be to register with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI). You can do this by following the Non EU Trained Pharmacists route on the PSI website. This is a two step process:

1. Qualification Recognition

The PSI must ensure that a person’s education, training and qualifications are of a necessary standard to practice in Ireland. This process involves four stages, including an equivalence examination and a professional registration examination. As this process may involve a number of different people, institutions and regulatory authorities, be prepared for this step to possibly take a significant amount of time to complete.

2. Application for Registration

If recognition of your qualification is successful, a certificate will be issued by the PSI. After that you can apply for registration with the PSI.

English Language Competence

In order to register for the PSI, you will need to prove that you have achieved a standard of proficiency in the English language. You can do this by sitting a language exam such as the IELTS.

In general, you must meet or exceed the minimum score in each of the individually scored components, as well as the minimum overall score. Failing this, your certificate can not be accepted. Find out more about the PSI’s language requirements here.

Education Requirement

A 5-year Bachelor’s Degree is the minimum requirement of education and training in order to apply for registration with the PSI.

Step Two: Obtain an Employment Permit

Once you have successfully registered with the PSI, you can apply for an employment permit. There are two types to choose from:

  • General Permit
  • Critical Skills Permit

Step Three: Visa

The final step in the relocation process is to acquire a Visa to legally move to Ireland. You can only do this once you have obtained your employment permit. Note that some countries may be exempt from the visa requirement.

To recap, in order to work in a pharmacist position in Ireland you will need to register with the PSI, obtain an employment permit, and obtain a VISA.
