In a recent survey, we looked at the attitudes and behaviours of pharmacists in the community sector and found out their opinions on working in support vs. supervising pharmacist roles.

This survey received a notable 131 responses, which we have made available in a concise, easily digestible report. We believe this report will be beneficial to pharmacy owners and employers in order to improve their decision making surrounding their pharmacy staff.

Of the 131 respondents, only 8.4% had less than three years experience as a registered pharmacist, meaning that nearly 90% of respondents were eligible to take on supervising roles.

There are a number of reasons why pharmacists may choose to move into supervising roles. When asked, the top three factors affecting pharmacists’ decisions came down to salaries, benefits packages, and location. We've explored some of these factors below:

  • Higher salary: As mentioned above, one of the top reasons pharmacists choose to progress into supervising roles is down to the opportunity to earn a higher annual salary. At present, we are seeing more and more clients offering upwards of €100k for supervising pharmacist positions.
  • Heightened responsibility: While this may not appeal to everyone, becoming a supervising pharmacist will allow you to have a greater influence on the direction and management of the pharmacy. You will be able to make decisions regarding staffing, inventory, and other key areas that impact the success of the business. • Professional recognition: Becoming a supervising pharmacist is a significant achievement within the pharmacy profession and is recognised as such. It can lead to increased respect and recognition from colleagues and peers, and can enhance your professional reputation. This also feeds into your own personal fulfilment, and can leave you more motivated to continue your career development.
  • Benefits packages: Apart from the higher salary, one reason that stood out as an incentive for pharmacists to take on supervising roles was the benefits packages that came with it. Included in these are health insurance, pension, extended annual leave, sick leave, and more. Some roles also will only require you to work a 4 day week, helping you achieve a much greater work-life balance.
